Alexander Hoi-Yuer Yuan: Arriving to Canada as a teen gave me first-hand experience as a young immigrant in this country. I focused on obtaining a good education so I could give back to the adopted country that has given me so much. Forty five years after arriving in Canada with very little financial resources, I am now living the “Canadian dream”, embracing the freedom and prosperity this country offers to all those who work hard, yet never forgetting my roots.
My experience building a business and starting a charitable organization from the ground up, has given me a national perspective of the importance of increased collaboration between government, community organizations and NGO’s in a nonpartisan way to effect positive change for our citizens.
In 1997, I started a charitable organisation to serve and support inner city kids in neighbourhoods affected by violence. The organisation ran for 18 years, raising more than $1 million in funding to help less fortunate kids have a chance to participate in organized sports. We developed partnerships with cultural and community organizations such as the Salvation Army and Children’s Aid, to provide safe and healthy options for youth across Canada. My work as an active board member on the Alliance for York Region Education (CAYRE), an organization to promote literacy for children and an anti-bullying prevention program in York Region, allowed me to provide leadership, direction and help create opportunities to enhance their development. Hands on experience dealing with youth, seniors and people with disabilities has given me a clear vision of the work that needs to be done to ensure that existing legislation meets the needs of our most vulnerable and new legislation can fill the gap of any deficiencies.
To make a difference and have an impact in the community, one needs to be both prepared to and capable of working across party lines. I have a strong and diverse network of contacts I have built across the GTA and Peel region, in government, media and NGOs.
Running as a candidate provincially and working in Municipal and Federal elections, has given me great insight into the inner workings of politics and has opened my eyes to the possibilities of effecting real change if people are willing to overcome obstacles and work together as a team. It also highlighted the importance of having a broad base of contacts from diverse occupations and political parties to ensure that I can effectively understand the needs in the distinct communities across Ontario. I have worked hard to earn the respect of business associates, politicians and community members across the political spectrum and the Province.
My work with Chinese media helped to ensure that the people in my community had a voice. I have done extensive outreach and speak regularly at community events to guarantee that newcomers to Canada understand the freedom, democracy and unique opportunities that are available for them here in Canada.
I am comfortable dealing with different cultures, both at the community and professional level and am accustomed to addressing municipal, provincial and national issues.
I feel confident that I would be an exceptional nominee candidate for the Richmond Hill Conservative Party of Canada and I would be honoured to serve my country in this capacity.
