Youth Leadership Club
Chinese American Parent Association of Howard County
2015-2016
Purpose:
Chinese-American children are outstanding in many ways. We are very proud of what our children have achieved. At the same time, we are setting higher goals and expectations for them. Leadership has become a critical skill to acquire in order to achieve those goals and meet those expectations. But what is leadership skill after all? Leaders are self-motivated and passionate about what they do. Leaders don't just collect the title, instead they take initiative upon issues they truly care about. Leaders do what they do, not because others are doing it or their parents want them to do it. They do it because THEY want to do it. But above all, leaders not only know what they want, but also know why they want it. They have the sense of purpose.
Our club is designed to help the children find their sense of purpose so THEY not YOU will be the engine behind everything they achieve.
Objectives
1. Provide support and resources to enhance public speech skills.
2. Enrich volunteer experience.
3. Provide leadership opportunities.
4. Positively influence students so that they are proud of their Chinese heritage.
Implementation:
The club activities will help develop students' leadership skills by working on real-world issues. The students will conduct independent or team research on real community issues and present their findings to an authentic audience. The students will participate in community meetings and voice their thoughts on various community issues. They will take actions based on their research and will be encouraged to take a leadership role on these initiatives.
To provide more leadership opportunities, the club will be mainly managed and operated by the students themselves. The first leadership team will be volunteer based. A new student body will be elected at the May 2016 meeting.
The students are encouraged but not required to attend all the meetings or participate in all the activities. The students can select the meetings/activities they would like to attend to fit in their interests and schedule.
Topics for 2015-2016:
The students registered in the club will meet once a month led by a group of 2-3 parent volunteers. Each meeting will last 2 hours. We will select one topic for each meeting. The students are required to prepare for the presentation/discussion in advance when necessary. We might have field activities other than the meetings.
For the school year 2015-2016, the following topics are planned:
Saturday, December 5: Lunar New Year and My Family Tradition (Part I Discussion) Miller Library
This meeting will be in a free discussion format. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate. Students will be asked to prepare the following topics to discuss in the meeting:
1. Does your family celebrate LNY and how?
2. Is celebrating Lunar New Year very important to you and your family? Why?
3. Would you like to have a school day off on Lunar New Year? Why or why not?
4. If you would like to have a school day off on Lunar New Year, what would you suggest we, as a Chinese-American community, should do to make it happen? What actions would you like to take to make it happen? Some background information will be provided to the students and their families.
Objectives:
1. Be proud of their family traditions and their Chinese heritage.
2. Learn how to discuss in a group setting, to convey messages effectively and to solve problems in a creative way with a win-win outcome in mind.
Thursday, December 17 7:30pm: Lunar New Year and My Family Tradition (Part II BOE public hearing testimony)
BOE Building Board Room
We will organize interested students to participate and testify on the December BOE meeting on School Calendar planning. Particularly, they will be asked to testify on their opinion regarding the school day-off on Lunar New Year.
Objectives:
1. Learn how to advocate for themselves effectively in front of the authority.
2. Practice public speech skills.
January: Lunar New Year and My Family Tradition (Part III interview with Baltimore Sun reporter, TBD)
Some CAPA board members were interviewed by the Baltimore Sun reporter Lisa Philip. She seems very interested in our LNY initiative. We plan to organize a round table discussion conducted by our club students and Lisa Philip or another Baltimore Sun reporter. It will be published in the newspaper.
Objectives:
1. Develop skills to work with the media.
This offers an opportunity for the students to interact with the media directly, a very important skill they should acquire in order to become an outstanding leader.
2. Learn how to express your thoughts in an organized and effective way.
We are also planning on the following topics. More details will be followed.
January/February: Design name and logo for the club
February: Draft and present primary election packet with basic election facts
March:Conduct BOE candidates research
April: Volunteer at poll station or other places (community service hours will be certified); Share the election volunteer experience
May: Share community volunteer experience and ideas; student body election.
