On November 20, 2014, rookie police Officer Peter Liang was patrolling one of the most dangerous buildings in New York.  When he went to check the pitch-black eighth-floor stairwell, his gun went off and the bullet from his gun ricocheted off a wall and killed 28-year-old Akai Gurley.

We feel terribly sad for both families who have been traumatized by this unfortunate incident.  However, we are incensed by the recent indictment of Officer Liang by Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson.  In less than two months ago, a white officer walked away free in Eric Garner case which captured national attention.  Garner’s death occurred in broad daylight and was recorded on cellphone video, in which we could hear Garner’s repeated cries of “I can’t breathe!” while most reports wrote about Gurley’s death as “unfortunate accident.”

We believe Officer Liang has been the scapegoat of shameful racial politics in New York City.  The difference in the results of these two cases underscores the capriciousness of our justice system.  While we condemn police violence and support police training reforms, we demand same treatment under the same law!

We ask district attorney Thomson drop all charges against Officer Liang immediately.
