Hi Maggie,
Here is my response to the Chinese community, you can post on the web or some one want to translate into Chinese post both language. And I will send this to other Chinese media. Thanks
Dear Chinese-American Community Leaders:
This election is one of the most critical elections for our community in history, due to the fact that SCA 5 is a wake-up call for all of us!!!
It is a very difficult decision to make for our Chinese-American Community; where to register, how to vote and whom to vote for or support.
But take a look at the voting history and the track record/facts: a week after taking the unprecedented step of suspending three colleagues, the California State Senate erased the lawmakers’ names, press releases and archives from its websites, but all three Senators were paid $95 K during their leaves of absence.
Lucky for us, the Senate left in place bare-bones information for the districts of Democratic Sens. Leland Yee of San Francisco, Ronald Calderon of Montebello and Roderick Wright of Los Angeles. The Democratic Party lost their Super Majority power on the Senate floor, leaving phone numbers and a list of constituent services staff can provide. But is this what we are looking for in the future? The facts prove that “ONE PARTY RULE” corrupts. Looking into the facts:
1. Some Chinese-American officials elected by the people for the Chinese-American community actually SUPPORTED SCA 5, which would have repealed Prop 209 (which eliminated quotas for admission to California universities based on race and ethnicity thereby benefiting the Chinese community).
2. The arrest of Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) was shocking and troubling for the people of San Francisco and the greater Bay Area with charges of taking payments in exchange for official favors and conspiring to illegally traffic in firearms, an investigation targeting down to San Francisco Supervisors.
On the other hand, the month of May was declared by President George H.W. Bush as "Asian American Heritage Month” to honor the Asian Community in 1991. Governor Pete Wilson (R-CA) and the voters passed Propositions 209 and 187 in 1996. In 2000 SB Woo’s (D) 80/20 requested that all Chinese-Americans register to vote as Democrats to block vote against President George W. Bush’s election. President Bush was the Republican President who appointed Elaine Chao to be the 24th U. S. Secretary of Labor; she was the first American woman of Asian descent appointed to a President's Cabinet in our nation's history.
Senator Robert Huff (R- Los Angeles) not only voted NO on SCA 5 but also wrote SJR-23 on January 30, 2014 related to the State of California apologizing for historic discrimination against Chinese-Americans and calling for the U.S. Congress to do the same, but they haven't apologized as they have for other minorities.
Our Chinese-American community leaders, please think first!! Are we to continue voting for the super Majority? Or are we voting for the core values for which we stand and support? All Americans are created equal regardless of Color, Religion, Gender, or Ethnicity. A color blind state for all, as Martin Luther King, Jr. would have said.
