The Least Among All Of You Is The Greatest. Luke 9:48.

Look around your congregation the next time you attend worship. The rector will probably stand in the center of the room, decked out in snazzy finery. He or she will speak and people will listen (or pretend to listen). But the rector will not be the greatest person there. Perhaps the greatest person is a little child, like the one Jesus say by his side in this passage. It could be the sitter who keeps the nursery. Maybe it's the visitor who receives a cursory handshake at the Peace, only to stand in a corner alone at coffee hour.
The greatest person in your parish might be the sexton who will wash the coffee cups after everyone else has gone home. Greatness could reside in the homeless man down the street who didn't enter the church because he was afraid he wouldn't be welcomed.
Jesus doesn't define greatness as we do. He turns our notions upside down. Do we discount the great ones in our midst? Can we begin to see as Jesus sees?
