1、Nissan Stadium
(Jefferson St & Rosa L Parks Blvd)
1038 Rosa L Parks Blvd, Nashville, TN

对于行人常见问题"What's this about"的回答参考:
As you may already aware, (former) NYPD police officer Peter Liang, was convicted of 2nd degree manslaughter on Feb 11 for the death of Akai Gurley who was hit by the bullet fired from Liang's gun bouncing off the stairwell in a Brooklyn house while Liang was on duty.
We feel deeply sorry for the loss of Gurley's family, and we are equally saddened by the selective and unjust prosecution of Peter Liang. It's an accident and tragedy, but not a crime. Some may suggest Liang is made a scapegoat of the tension between the law enforcement and the community.
Qian Wang, Xiaowen
- I don’t know the specifics about this, but let me repeat what I’ve said before xxx.
- I am neither a witness nor lawyer. I have no right to make any judgement.
- However, I do know that XXXXXX.
- I cannot answer that question but I do know that xxx
• We want justice for all, not selective justice.
• We question the NYPD and the system; We want to raise awareness about this issue among people of all colors.
• We feel that Liang’s case is treated differently.
• We have a team of legal professionals who provide us legal support, and they express questions and doubts to the trial process. Please contact XX for further details.
Points we should AVOID:
• “We are standing for Asian minorities”
• “We do this out of support for Asian Americans”(避免强调种族问题)
• “It was an accident” (which means Liang is not guilty)
• “Why white policeman walk away but Asians cannot” (避免强调种族问题)
• “It is unfair for Liang; Liang is a victim; Liang should be freed.” (which means Liang is not guilty)
Other Tips:
5 懵懂的时候不要乱说话,不要出现“You are right” “I totally agree with you” 这样的话,答不上
It’s an interesting idea, I will leave this for experts to answer.”
Q1: What happened?
NYPD officer Liang, along with another rookie officer, was assigned to patrol the Pink House, one of “the most dangerous projects in the city.” It was pitch-dark with no light.
His gun accidentally discharged as he opened the door. The bullet bounced off a wall and unfortunately caused Gurley’s death.
Liang was convicted of second-degree manslaughter and is expecting up to 15 years in Jail.
Q2: Why is the conviction problematic?
The court and NYPD used double standards considering what happened now and before.
He was made a scapegoat for all the previous police brutality. Liang is the only one who did not intentionally use a weapon but he ended up being the only one that has been indicted.
We think this case unveiled problems in the system which affects everyone. If these problems are not addressed, similar tragedies could happen again. Today Liang was thrown out for temporary peace, tomorrow it could be any policeman. The security of policemen is important.
【In the wake of so many unfortunate deaths of unarmed black men, some cops gotta hang.
1) Officer Liang didn’t intentionally shoot at Gurley. (In the previous case, policeman Wilson, shot 12 rounds at Michael Brown as he was running away.)
2) Officer Liang didn’t even see Gurley before firing (previous vase: Loehmann, who shot a 12-year-old black boy with a fake gun to death under the daylight.) 】
Q3: Why are you protesting today? What is your goal?
We demand justice for Liang and equal justice for all.
We believe officer Liang was subjected to selective prosecution.
The recent increasing tension in police-community relations made Liang a scapegoat for previous police brutality.
We feel deeply sorry for Gurley and his family.
Certainly accountability is in order. However, Liang’s current conviction was a clear signal of selective prosecution. We object to the system covering up racial injustice with more racial injustice without addressing the real issue.
We demand accountability from NYPD for its irresponsible patrol assignments, poor training of officers, and its lack of support for its probationary officers.
(Goal:
Q4: Are you saying this was an accident and Liang was innocent?
We feel sympathy for Akai Gurley. Both him and Peter Liang are victims of structural discrimination, to different extent. Throwing one untrained officer under the bus is not going to solve the problem. NYPD should be accountable, not a rookie policeman.
I was not a witness to the incident, I cannot comment on this. We have lawyers and legal practitioners focusing on this part.
I hope the lawyers and the judges involved will make their best judgements based on fairness and justice.
I do know Peter Liang is a good person, he’s a good son. He decided to become a police officer to protect the community when he was a five-year child. He worked to protect people’s safety after seeing his mom being robbed. Now he is abandoned by NYDP. What a tragedy.
Liang is extremely sorry for what happened. His subtle expression of remorse, influenced by his Asian background, has been mis-portrayed by the media as being unsympathetic. This is not fair.
Q5: Who do you think should be responsible for the death of Akai Gurley?
I am neither a lawyer nor a judge so I cannot comment on this. I’d like to say that I feel really saddened about the loss of Akai.
Meanwhile, I am greatly concerned that Officer Peter Liang has been made a scapegoat for the failings of many others in government and NYPD.
If you look at all cases involving police-induced fatalities before, Liang is the only one who did not intentionally use a weapon but he ended up being the only one that has been indicted. He’s definitely treated differently.
Q6: What to say to NYPD?
We would like to hold NYPD accountable.
Why didn’t they provide adequate training for their policemen?
Why did they send these rookies to patrol the most dangerous areas? Why did they pair rookies with rookies?
Why didn’t they offer sufficient support for its probationary officers?
These are questions we ask on behalf of Liang, his partner Landau, all policemen, and all law-abiding residents. We think this case unveiled problems in the system which affects everyone. If these problems are not addressed, similar tragedies could happen again. Today Liang was thrown out for temporary appeasement, tomorrow it could be any policeman.
Q7: What is your next step?
We are having people rallying and marching over 40 cities across the country, calling for justice. We are fundraising for Liang because he and his families need both spiritual and economic support. He and his families suffered a lot from this incident, which they don’t deserve.
Q8: Do you protest for the right of Asian Americans?
We protest for justice for all. In this case it happens to be an Asian police officer. If selective justice wins this time, anyone could be the next scapegoat, whether he or she is white, black, yellow or brown.
Q9:Why didn’t many Asians show up in previous protests while you rally today for this Asian guy?
Just because you didn’t see or didn’t know doesn’t mean we were not there. We as minorities in this society have always been supporting justice for all in this country. If people here don’t know this, perhaps the media should pay more attention to our appeals from now on.
Q10: Are you American? Why do you care about our judicial or juridical system?
Whether I am American is not really important. Everyone in the country cares about and SHOULD care.
Key Facts about the Case Against Officer Liang
1. Liang did not aim at anyone; instead, his bullet bounced off from a wall before hitting Mr. Gurley. (source para.7)
2. This is a highly unusual conviction: Even though this was an unintentional shoot, Officer Liang still became the first NYPD cop convicted of a police-involved shooting accident in over a decade. (source para.8)
3. For the past 15 years before this case, there are 179 fatalities involving on-duty NYPD cops. Only 3 cases led to indictments, just 1 conviction. In the last conviction of 1999, the victim "was gunned down in a hail of police bullets." (source para.3-5)
4. Officer Liang was a part of a program that pairs rookie officers to fight crime, which was described as a ticking time bomb years ago by the commissioner and only recently got phased out. (source para.1-3) Officer Liang also didn't know how to perform CPR due to his lack of training from Police Academy classes. (source para.7)
A Conviction that Hurts
1. Office Liang was aspired to become a police officer since he was a child. (source para.2)
2. Officer Liang graduated from M.S. 131 School located in Chinatown, Manhattan, and is said to have many African American friends. (source para.2)
3. A harsh punishment on Liang would discourage minorities to become a police officer or take other duties for public good. (source para.15)
4. The indictment and conviction have shown to the current police officers (especially those of racial minorities) that their own department and union could throw them off the boat for a minor mistake. This would hurt their capacity when dealing with criminals and adding danger to their job.
State Assemblyman Ron Kim:
"I do not believe true justice prevailed. Our system failed Gurley and it failed Liang. It pitted the unjust death of an innocent young black man against the unjust scapegoating of a young Asian police officer who was frightened, poorly trained, and who committed a terrible accident."
Assemblyman William Colton:
“I remain greatly concerned that Police Officer Peter Liang has been made a scapegoat for the failings of many others in government which are a much more real cause to this tragic death.”
“All evidence shows that Police Officer Liang was not even aware that anyone was hit until sometime after the gun was discharged. This closing statement was so prejudicial and inflammatory that it may have clouded the facts of the case for the jury and it may well be a valid basis for an appeal of the determination.”
“We can never remove past injustices by creating new injustices.” Edward Munoz, Retired New York police officer: “Politicians used Liang as sacrificed scapegoat.”
Frank H. Wu, Professor, UC Hastings College of the Law:
“There is no doubt that racial discrimination and disparities, some of which is open and much of which is structural and subtle, continues to afflict law enforcement that is legitimate and necessary.”
Denise Gitsham, for Congress: (国会议员候选人)
“Unfortunately, this tragedy occurred in a political environment where tensions between police officers and communities of color are at an all time high.”
“We, as a society, have a great deal of work to do to ensure that our criminal justice system treats everyone, regardless of their skin color, race, or ethnicity, with dignity and respect. Pinning the weight of past inequalities on one rookie Asian officer, however, is not the path to justice.”
Washington Post:
“Liang's indictment comes during a time when police brutality became a major issue for the N.Y.P.D. and that the department is being scrutinized for their actions.”
