Registration deadline for general election is Oct. 20

Residents have one month to get their voting status set and ready for the Nov. 4 general election.

Residents who are not registered to vote have until Oct. 20 to register, according to the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters.

Residents who have moved or changed their name or political affiliation must re-register to vote. In addition, residents who would like to vote by mail have until Oct. 28 as their last day to request a vote-by-mail ballot.

The registrar of voters is also offering early voting to all registered voters. Any voter can visit an early voting register center. Dates will run Oct. 6 through Nov. 3, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be weekend sessions Oct. 25-26 and Nov. 1-2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to the registrar of voters website.

Cupertino residents will have plenty to consider on their ballots during the general election, as the Cupertino City Council will have three seats up for grabs, Cupertino Union School District school board also with three seats available, and the Fremont Union High School District is looking to pass two measures.

Eight Cupertino residents will compete for three Cupertino City Council seats. Current council members Barry Chang and Mark Santoro will work to retain their council seats. Councilman and two-time mayor Orrin Mahoney terms out this year after having served since 2005.

Council members are limited to two consecutive elected terms. The three winners will join current Mayor Gilbert Wong and current Vice Mayor Rod Sinks on the dais in December. Challengers include Darcy Paul, Savita Vaidhyanathan, Andy Huang, Michael Hunsweck, Robert McCoy, and Don Sun.

Four candidates will campaign for three seats on Cupertino Union’s school board. CUSD incumbents Gary McCue and Ben Liao will not be seeking re-election after many years of combined service. McCue was initially elected to the board in 2001 and Liao in 2007.

The election will see incumbent Anjali Kausar work to retain the seat she was appointed to in 2009. New candidates in the race include Kristen Pan Lyn, Soma McCandless, and Chris Zhang. Winners will join incumbents Josephine Lucey and Phyllis Vogel.

In the Fremont Union High School District, trustees Bill Wilson, Barbara Nunes and Hung Wei are up for reelection; however, no candidates came forward to challenge the trio for their seats. As a result, the race will be uncontested and all three trustees will be sworn in for an additional four years at a district board meeting, likely in December.

Also on Nov. 4, there will be two measures for voter consideration tied to the high school district. Voters will consider Measure J, which proposes renewing the existing $98 per parcel tax from July 2016 through July 2022. The current tax expires in 2016.

Voters will also consider Measure K, which proposes a new $295 million bond measure to build new classrooms, improve aging facilities, and boost access to technology, according to the district.
