Current City
councilman of Downey Mario Guerra, republican state senator candidate
representing SD32, is an very energetic and go-getting person. One can get an
immediate impression, that he is a doer. Dodging questions is never his
style of being a Politician. On 9/11/14, TOC representatives met with him and
candidly exchanged views that are concerned. After learned more
about his life, these takeaways make a lot more sense to us.
Mr. Mario is a
successful small business owner, first generation immigrant from Cuba. He has
realized American dream by taking advantages of opportunities this great country
presented to him. He firmly believes equal opportunity, level playing field and
hard working. During his 4-year tenure as Downey Mayor, he masterminded the
plan to create 8000 jobs, revive Downey by bringing more businesses to the city,
and make the City of Downey a much safe place to live. All these achievements
are the result of his believe to make the pie bigger, rather than to
cut pieces from someone else’s pie.
On the issue of
SCA5, he does not think that races shall play a role in school admission
process. As a father of 5, he does not take education lightly. He has been a
strong advocator of Public Charter school program. Charter school is still
a public school that is run by private entities. It brings positive competition
to education systems with higher performance standard. Teachers are more
accountable.
Mr. Guerra supports
Proposition 209. He believes that the passage of Proposition 209
contributes to higher graduation rates posted at University of California schools. In
his interpretation, AA will actually hurt Latino students with lower graduation
rates.
His conservative
fiscal believe is clearly reflected on his view of California bullet
train project. With his strong business sense, he think the project is just
another waste spending of tax payers’ money by California democratic
government.
Mr. Guerra also
supports immigration reform, a bipartisan plan to provide paths of legalizing
illegal immigrants while securing our borders. He also shows his compassionate
view of providing necessary social safety net to those who are vulnerable.
Mr. Guerra has
visited a few Chinese cities and was impressed by its achievements. He certainly
appreciates hard working Chinese people in developing their economy and
society.
Although his
opponent has bad personal and political records, Mr. Guerra indicated that he
is not running a negative campaign. He has such high confidence that his record
will speak itself. As the polling stands now, Mr. Guerra posts 44%
to 35% lead over his opponent, democrat Tony Mendoza.
Mr. Guerra is a formidable candidate who truly demonstrates republic principles and values, as well as his ability and non-partisan experience to reach out to the other side of aisle.
