I admire those who have a big heart for all the people who are poor or weak and need support from our society. I agree with every word you said that we need to work towards our common good.
However, the current admission policy doesn't really benefit the population in the way it intended to. For those of you who are interested in learning more on this topic, please read Daniel Golden's Price of Admission to find out how elite schools achieve racial balance: by admitting Blacks from Africa and middle class. Otherwise these schools can't fill their %. On the other hand, lower income Asians can't get any benefit. At the same time, those students who got admitted at a lower academic standard cannot keep up with top college’s rigorous curriculum. Some of them ended up with dropping out. This book is written by an African-American scholar Jason Riley
It provides a thorough analysis on how “many efforts by liberals to lift black underclass not only failed, but often harm the intended beneficiaries” (quoted from the publisher’s summary).

It is true that no one would know how the % will change if income based preference is implemented. Nevertheless, we need to move ahead. We are asking to remove race as a determining factor in the holistic evaluation. We may not precisely predict how it will play out in the future. But one thing we know for sure is that the current admission policy is not doing good for our society. We have to change it. 不破不立。
More and more people from all races realized it. But because of historical reasons, it becomes the Emperor’s New Clothes that many people don't want to admit it. But somebody has to point it out. This somebody could be us - the new Aisan-American immigrants. Why not? We are new to this country therefore carry less historical burden than the people who have been living here for generations, just like the innocent boy who were finally brave enough to say it out loud “But the emperor doesn’t have any clothes on!’
