It’s been 101 years since President Woodrow Wilson issued his famous presidential proclamation that officially established the first national Mother’s Day holiday to celebrate every mother in this great nation. 

Mothers play a key role in building and maintaining connections across generations. Even today, they most often serve as the important communication link in any family, and take the lead in passing down family stories, life lessons, and traditions. Honoring the role that mothers play in our lives and the important position they serve in all families is just part of the story behind Mother’s Day – but there’s more. 

Mother’s Day isn’t about a card, flowers or even breakfast in bed. It’s about a mother’s commitment to the past, present, and future. Mother’s Day honors women who have acted not only on behalf of their own children but also on behalf of an entire future generation. 

My mother was the glue that held our family of six together. I don’t know how she juggled the meals, household responsibilities, science projects, visiting friends, sick kids, while also teaching full-time at juvenile hall. 

While my mother passed away years ago, I never tire of thinking about her, and all moms, on this special day for all the work they’ve done to make our homes the happiest place to be.
