Position Summary

Asian & Pacific Islander American Vote - Michigan seeks two to three fall interns to assist with the implementation of our 2014 civic engagement field plan including voter registration, education, and mobilization. Civic Engagement interns will also assist with organizational efforts related to fundraising and Asian American issue advocacy including economic justice and immigration reform. The ideal interns will be self-motivated, responsible, and dedicated to the advancement of the Asian American community in Michigan.


This is approximately a 20-hour per week internship position

– the civic engagement intern will receive a stipend. The internship will take place from June 2014-November 2014 (5 months) primarily in Southeast Michigan. West Michigan candidates may be eligible and should contact us at the information below for more information. 

About APIAVote - Michigan:

Asian & Pacific Islander American Vote– Michigan is a nonpartisan nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that serves the Asian Pacific Islander American community through civic participation, advocacy, and education.

Responsibilities


The APIAVote-Michigan fall civic engagement interns will report to the executive director. Interns will help:

1. Organize and conduct voter registration drives at APIA places of worship, festivals, community events, grocery stores and language schools and disseminate voter education materials pertaining to the APIA community;


2. Assist with the recruitment and coordination of volunteers for voter registration drives and Get Out the Vote operations, including phone banking, door-to-door canvassing, and tracking field data to ensure numerical goals are met;


3. Assist with language access and other advocacy/campaign work including but not limited to community outreach/education, events and following up on educational candidate questionnaires;


4. Coordinate weekly civic engagement activities in conjunction with our Youth Leadership Core summer program;


5. Assist with planning and logistics of events such as the annual dinner, community events and nonpartisan candidate forums;


6. Assist with media outreach as needed and provide APIAVote-Michigan with relevant media coverage; and


7. Perform administrative duties, such as research, data entry and copying.



Qualifications

Excellent written and oral communications skills, experience with APIA communities or organizations, ability to work on multiple tasks and prioritize effectively, and ability to work with a diverse team of people required. Grassroots voter mobilization and fluency in one or more Asian languages preferred.
