This is an ABC Club activity on the topics of video games and leisure time. Students first introduced themselves then their parents. The recording secretary listed time spent playing video games, and the pros and cons of video games. Below are some quick notes. 

Q1. Anti social-- does not respond to parents. 
2. If the power supply is out: lack of patience. 
3. Addicting game: failure may result in screaming and other destructive behavior  

Texting too long: grounded
Some parents set conditions: example: academic performance and no whining for a week.

Kids don't like parents to be addicted to WeChat, what do parents think about kids being addicted to video game?

Solution: limiting WeChat as well as video games. 

WeChat is a form of communication, VG is not communication

Good point of VG: life style, surgeon, soldier, life strategy to succeed defeat your opponent, unrealistic, not like real life. 

Some created a game on Scratch by some simple form of coding. 

Software: write codes, logic, Application. 

Do kids feel they have enough time to pursue their hobbies? Examples: no, due to HW; no, due to brother wanting attention; no, due to Chinese HW; yes finishing HW then come home and play 30 min piano; no time for basketball due to HW; yes, by being productive so she finds time to do what she likes.

Parents discussed how kids changed during the middle school years, and asked Arnold and another middle schooler's input. 

Many times during the sharing stage, parents and kids find the other side is not that unreasonable. It is through these open discussions that kids build more trust toward sharing their feelings with the parents. The presence of other families makes it easier for kids to "complain" (such as not enough time for leisure). 

At the age range of 9-11, it is the best time to start regular group discussions for kids to hone in communication with peers, parents, and other adults. This will promote good interaction during the meeting, but more importantly follow-up discussions among group members. 

How to find more ways to have kids speak more, especially in an environment where they subconsciously feel they are the minority? Kids may feel comfortable in this kind of home environment but at school, it may be quite different. 

With a core group of parents we can provide more chances for them to practice: public speaking, community performance, visiting senior centers, involving in election etc.
