Re-post. There are a lot we can do to make a difference.
First, we want to drive Chinese voters’ registration so that people can notice the increase of Chinese American voters. Registered Chinese voters in D28 are about 8%. D28 is a heavy Asian concentrated area including Saratoga, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Campbell, Monte Sereno, and part of San Jose. If we can increase the registered voters to over 10% or higher, politicians will see that we are serious about participating American politics, not just in words. If we all vote in bloc, both democratic and republican parties will take our community's interests seriously. Voting in bloc is the most effective way to gain political clout. That’s what 80-20 has been promoting in last 10+ years.
The basic idea of 80-20 initiative is to urge Asian pacific Americans (APAs) to form a swing bloc vote so that we become a vital political force in affecting presidential elections, but it can be broaden to any local or state elections.
Supporting candidates with a single issue may not get us very far. It’s a personal matter whether we want identify ourselves as democrats, republicans, or independents. It’s important we support candidates who advocate for us, not purely based on their party affiliation. As a matter of fact, we want support candidates who are capable of reaching out and working with both parties so that they can be effective in what they do.
We have to be mindful, this is not a sprint event; we need to stay alert for the long-haul.
