Key Points against Prop 64:

1.     Prop 64 allows marijuana commercials on 95% of the TV shows hurting our future generations by desensitizing them towards drug abuse. On the other hand, TV tobacco advertisement had been forbidden 45 years ago.

In Colorado, prior to legalization (2011), 10.7% of youth (12 - 17 years old) were current marijuana users, compared to 7.6% nationally. Post legalization in 2013/14, 12.6% of CO youth were users. Parkview Hospital Emergency Room in Colorado stated recently that since recreational marijuana had been legal in that state, the hospital has seen a 51% increase in children 18 and under who tested positive for marijuana. Nearly half of all newborns in that hospital also tested positive for pre-natal marijuana exposure. If marijuana use starts in adolescence, the chances of addition are 1 in 6.

2.     According to Federal Drug Administration (FDA), marijuana is a Category I prohibited drug -- the worst category, without any medical value and is addictive and a gateway drug to more pernicious drugs. FDA has maintained this strong stance continuously and reiterated it recently.

3.     Without establishing concrete laws to test and apprehend drivers under the influence of marijuana, it is disastrous to legalize marijuana for entertainment purposes!  Currently, as opposed to drunk driving, there is no standard on what exactly constitutes drug driving and this is already causing over 440,000 cases of deaths and injuries in the United States every year.  California Association of Highway Patrolmen cites a recently released AAA Foundation study in the State of Washington where fatalities doubled in auto crashes involving marijuana after it as legalized for entertainment.

4.     The notion that Prop 64 would bring in much needed tax revenue is a myth. We will spend much more on related legal and health problems as well as drug rehabilitation. Proposition 64 also specifies that tax money from it can only be used for specific purposes such as research on marijuana but not on California General Fund; that is, not for education, roads or welfare.

5.     If passed, the problems of crime rate especially organized crime, marijuana consumption rate, marijuana consumption by youngsters, will seriously aggravate similar to the other states with legalization. It will attract the wrong kind of crowds to California: Home growing of marijuana will get much worse and harm the neighborhoods. Every person can grow up to 6 plants at home and virtually make up to $10,000 each. Many may quit their jobs and becoming "farmers" as people in Seattle do. Gangsters will come in and rob the houses with marijuana. It will also be up to local cities to create exact ordinances on marijuana.  In liberal Bay Area cities, we will likely have the most aggressive and unacceptable laws for marijuana making this region much more unsafe.

In opposing the initiative Senator Feinstein made the following statement, "Proposition 64 is substantially different from legalization measures in other states and would repeal countless consumer protections just passed last year and signed into law by Governor Brown. It rolls back anti-smoking advertising protections we’ve had for decades and allows marijuana smoking ads in prime time, on programs with millions of children and teenage viewers. "The AAA Foundation for Highway Safety reports that deaths in marijuana-related car crashes have doubled since Washington state approved legalization. Yet incredibly, Proposition 64’s proponents refused to include a DUI standard for marijuana, making it extremely difficult to keep impaired drivers off our highways. I urge California voters to oppose Prop 64."
